Within the travel scholarship programme, some 30-40 scholars from universities in the Nordic countries are sponsored annually for short research trips to Africa in connection with ongoing research projects.

The study scholarship programme permits some 30 students, teachers and journalists at Nordic universities, to spend one month in Uppsala using the Institute's library resources.

The scholarship for PhD candidates enables PhD candidates who wish to cooperate with the research clusters at NAI to spend one or two months at the institute.

The Nordic guest researchers' programme is aimed at researchers in the Nordic countries and awards scholarship for a maximum stay of two months.

The African guest researchers' scholarship programme is one way of fulfilling the Institute's aim to promote cooperation and contact between Nordic and African researchers. It was established in order to give African researchers an opportunity to make use of the resources of the Institute. On average, five to six scholars per year are invited to spend between two and three months at the Institute, working on their own projects. A few independently financed guest researchers visit the Institute every year.

The Guest Writer grant is a three-month stay a the insitute for a writer from Africa.

The Claude Ake Visiting Chair at Uppsala University is a collaboration between the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University, and the Nordic Africa Institute.
