Academic background
Mats Utas is Associate Professor in Cultural Anthropology. He has worked as a lecturer in social and cultural anthropology at University of Liberia and Stockholm University, as well as senior lecturer in sociology at Fourah Bay College (University of Sierra Leone). He is currently responsible for a course in African Studies at the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology, at Uppsala University. Utas has written extensively on child and youth combatants, media, refugees and gender in conflict and war zones. He has conducted fieldwork in Liberia, Sierra Leone and the Ivory Coast. His current research is on street-corner youth in urban Sierra Leone.
