Workshop II:

Religious NGOs and African Development

October 18-19, 2007
Venue: University of Bergen, Norway

Religious NGOs and CSOs- both Christian and Islamic- play critical roles in African Development. Indeed their developmental activities pre-date the "NGO Decade", as well as the recent proliferation of CSOs, in African development. Currently, religious NGOs occupy a peculiar structural and ideological position in contemporary African development, working in collaboration with (donor) states and simultaneously seeking to provide moral critique of African governments.

Despite their structural position in African development, mainstream NGO and Civil society research in Africa hardly address these organisations in any sustained manner. In fact, theoretical and policy discussions on civil society and its roles in African development have systematically neglected these organisations and their roles in African development.

This workshop seeks to focus attention, and promote Nordic research cooperation, on these critical civil society actors in African development.
