New Researchers at NAI
Andrew Byerley is a researcher in the field of human geography. He will work at NAI for two years within the research cluster Urban Dynamics. He will share his time between NAI and the department of Human Geography at Stockholm University. His research is focused on town planning and housing in African cities. In particular he deals with colonial and post-colonial planning. A conference later during 2010 and several publications are planned as results of his research.
Tea Virtanen is an anthropologist coming from Joensuu University in Finland. She has conducted research in Cameroon since 1994 and published her dissertation on Performance and Performativity in Pastoral Fulbe Culture in 2003. Her research at NAI will focus on urbanization.
Lisa Åkesson is an anthropologist and will work at NAI for two years within the research cluster Globalization, Trade and Regional Integration. She will share her time between NAI and the Department of Global Studies at Gothenburg University. Her research at NAI is focused on migration and in particular “circular migration”, when migrants return to their land or origin. A new policy is being established in Europe where circular migration will be encouraged and this is in particular what Lisa Åkesson will research at NAI. The goal is that her research will also lead to a workshop and a book.
Research at NAI
The Nordic Africa Institute is a research institution tasked to undertake and encourage studies on contemporary African or Africa-related issues by scholars in mainly the Nordic and African countries.
The multi-disciplinary focus of its research agenda addresses topical issues within the social sciences. With its research activities pursuing close interaction between Nordic and African scholars, the Institute seeks to enhance international collaboration and aims to contribute towards and stimulate academic as well as informed public debate.

Mai Palmberg leaves NAI after 26 years service
Mai Palmberg, coordinator of the research programme “Cultural Images in and of Africa” at NAI is retiring and leaves NAI after nearly 26 years of service with the Institute. An article on her years with NAI, ”Remembering NAI”, will be published in the Institute Annual Report later in 2010.
